I should have posted this some time ago, but I was pretty busy and forgot all about it until today. Back in the middle of December I got yet another email from Glenn Canady (why does he keep sending me this stuff ?). This time it is all about a new book that he has coming out that ‘takes your efforts to the next level’.

And what level would that be Glenn ? Subterranean perhaps ? Straight down the toilet ? Glenn Canady, what you’ve done with your sites is an inspiration to us all. I’m sure anyone wanting to get their sites banned by Google will be waiting with baited breath for you to release your book.

I was planning to post some more information about possible reasons for Glenn Canady’s sites getting banned from Google (as if what I posted yesterday wasn’t reason enough !), but I’m running short of time today. So, what I’ll do is post a link to a forum which seems to shed a bit more light on what Glenn Canady was up to when he was getting people to link to pages that he was FTP’ing to their servers.

It’s been suggested that he was using Traffic Equalizer. Now I don’t know if you are familiar with Traffic Equalizer. It’s a program designed to generate thousands of doorway pages for your web site, with each page optimised for a particular keyword. The idea is that these rank well in the search engines, and even if each page only brings 1 or 2 visitors to your site then thats a few thousand more than you would have had otherwise. Sounds great doesn’t it ?

Think about it. How many times have you been searching for something only to find page after spammy page of this sort of thing ? Pages that contain no real content, just a bunch of keyword optimised ‘filler’ text, a link to the sites main page (sometimes a redirect), and almost always a bunch of Google Adword/Adsense boxes down the side.

It’s not difficult to see why the search engines HATE this sort of thing. If just one site is generating thousands of spammy worthless pages with no content, then imagine what it must be like if there are thousands of people doing this ? How many millions of pages must there be in Google and the other search engines that are doing nothing but polluting them, diluting the results, and vastly reducing the value and effectiveness of the search engines. To my mind, the really bad thing about these sort of programs is that they undermine the honest, hard working webmaster. The kind of person who takes time to work and create genuine and useful content that people would want to read . These poor guys often end up buried underneath the sea of worthless crap that the Traffic Equalizer users churn out.

Traffic Equalizer users, instead of spending money on stuff like Traffic Equalizer, why not use the money to buy something like WebPosition , or pay someone to optimise your web site ? Instead of spending time generating thousands of keywords and FTP’ing them to your server, why not spend the time writing some REAL content that people would want to come to your site and read ?

I’m mentioning Traffic Equalizer because it is the product mentioned in the thread about Glenn Canady. I don’t want to single Traffic Equalizer out as a ‘bad’ product, because there are a lot of similar offerings out there. I’m sure most webmasters have either used, or considered using software that claims to boost their traffic by fooling the search engines somehow. I’ll be quite honest, I have in the past ! Sometimes we desperately want to do well, but at the end of the day there is no substitute for hard work, knowledge, and experience. The search engines have rules, break them and eventually you WILL pay the price. A lesson Glenn Canady seems to be finding out.

Here is one of the comments from the discussion thread :

Glenn is actually putting spammy pages on other people’s sites (Freetrafficblast.com) and collecting on Adsense as his “compensation” for increasing other people’s traffic.

One of these “spammy software” owners told me that Glenn got an unpaid copy of their script to do this and refused to answer any questions or emails from said “software owner”.

I would be very reluctant to have Glenn put any of these pages on any of my sites. If he’s gotten banned from google because of his practices, make sure he doesn’t bring you down with him.

I came across a thread on the Digitalpoint forums. It’s all about the fact that Glenn Canady’s sites have been banned from Google.

I fail to see why anybody is surpised that Glenn Canady’s sites are banned !

It’s worth mentioning that Glenn Canady has changed his gorillawebsitemarketing.com site to have a rant at Google over his banning. This simply has to be seen to be believed, but believing Glenn Canady’s ’story’ is the last thing I will be doing. For as far as I am concerned it is simply that, a ’story’.

I freely admit, I have an axe to grind when it comes to Glenn Canady. If you had lost $8000 and a year of your life on a futile exercise then I think you would too. But lets look at some of what he is saying in his anti-Google rant :

He claims that on the 27th December 2004 Google banned 163 of his sites. Well, I have been watching Glenn Canady’s sites for some time and I can assure you that personalroses.com had no Pagerank (ie greyed out) for weeks, if not months, before the 27th December. Some of Glenn Canady’s other sites also had no PR weeks long before the 27th December. I think that what has got his back up is that his ‘flagship’ site, 5starshine got kicked out. Up until Christmas this did still have PR, unlike the others. It is also interesting that Google banned 163 of his sites, but not all of his sites ! Now why would Google not ban all of Glenn Canandy’s sites ? Does that not seem strange to you ?

Imagine that Google had suddenly, for no good reason (as Glenn would have us believe) decided that they didn’t like poor old Glenn Canady. He was obviously FAR smarter than they were, after all he was always making out that he was. With his super advanced SEO tactics he could have them jumping through hoops and make a success of any site.

Would Google not have banned all of his sites if they had a personal issue with Glenn Canady ? If they had an issue with Glenn Canady’s company, GLC Ventures, then would they not have banned all sites owned by GLC Ventures ? If they had an issue with all the sites sitting on Glenn Canady’s nameservers (ns0.5starshine.com / ns1.5starshine.com) then wouldn’t they have banned everything on those ?

Google haven’t done any of those things.

Look at atkinsdietplus.com, or gorillamarketing.com for example. These are Glenn Canady’s sites, they are still in Google, and have resonable PR. Why were they not banned ? They are on Glenn’s name servers and they are in his or his company’s name. They are very easily identifiable as his sites. If anyone at Google wanted to ban Glenn Canady or his company then they couldn’t miss these. But they didn’t ban those sites ! So why would Google ban some of the sites Glenn Canady has control over and not others ? The only logical reason is that Google had good reason to ban those sites, but not the others ! I’ll get back to this shortly and demonstrate a few VERY good reasons why Google would ban Glenn Canady’s sites, and possibly the sites of those he has ‘helped’ with his ‘SEO work’.

Back to gorillawebsitemarketing.com. On his censorship page he talks about Google’s banning being a direct attack on his reputation, ‘and in the end thats all a mans got’. And what reputation would that be ? His reputation as a spammer ? On the main page of gorillawebsitemarketing.com he says he has been marketing products on the internet for 10 years. I’m sure he has, but Glenn Canady confesses in his book to being a spammer (page 61/62 in the PDF). BTW - this was not a few emails that maybe he shouldn’t have sent. It was major league stuff and you can find plenty of documentation on it if you look. He claims he stopped ‘for a variety of reasons’. Maybe one of them was the attempts to sue Glenn Canady for $125m for his spamming activities.

While we are on the subject of Glenn Canady’s reputation and his personalroses.com site, has anybody else looked at the testimonial on the front page of that site ? The testimonial is supposed to be from an ecstatic customer. Whose name is on it - Glenn Canady, Navarre, FL. A testimonial from himself on his own site, and he’s worried about his reputation !

On the main page of Glenn Canady’s Gorilla Website Marketing site he has the following statement :

“As soon as those 163 sites were banned by Google, I had 3 different search engine experts look at all the websites to see if maybe I really had done something wrong without knowing it. After looking at all the sites and at every Google policy, they could find nothing that we had done wrong. They confirmed that I had followed every Google guidelines and policy. I’d spent a lot of money on staff to make sure of it.“

What I’d like to know is who the hell were these experts ? Were they real search engine experts, or were they just ‘experts’ like Glenn Canady ? Because I’d be seriously worried about anyone taking advice from these so-called experts.

OK, so why is he banned ? Why have Google singled out poor old, straight as a die, Glenn Canady and done this ‘evil’ deed ? According to Glenn Canady’s site he has no idea why this great injustice has been done to him. Let me give you some clues.

Anybody who knows anything about search engines knows full well that Google, along with the other search engines, have terms and conditions. They are businesses, not charities, and if you break those terms and conditions and do things that are likely to harm their business then they will kick you out. You can find the reasons to be kicked out here (Glenn - you might want to try having a read of this)

The T&C include the statement about “setting up pages/links with the sole purpose of fooling search engines may result in permanent removal from our index.” Now Glenn, only a few weeks ago was proclaiming himself as the leading SEO expert (at a time when some of his sites were already out of Google). Are we to believe that he didn’t know about this clause ? Was there anybody that didn‘t know about it !!

On the 24th May 2004 I received an email from Glenn Canady. It was about 2 things. First he was announcing a new service that he had set up, and secondly he was bragging about how his personalroses.com site was doing so well.

The email didn’t give many details about the new service, and nether did the web site, freetrafficblaster.com, but what the site implied was that providing you had a site of something like a PR5 then you could join in with this scheme that he had. At the time my site wasn’t PR5 and even if it was I had already had my fingers burnt once in dealing with this guy. BTW -he has completely changed freetrafficblaster.com from what was on offer back then, and unfortunately it isn’t in Archive.org. It is this scheme that I believe got his personalroses.com banned, and quite possible contributed to the other sites eventually getting banned.

OK, so you are probably wondering why you should take my word for it that there was anything even vaguely black hat about what Glenn Canady was doing. Read Glenn Canady’s second email, which was entitled ‘How My Clients Get 500% More Traffic for FREE!’. This was sent on the 27th July 2004. Please have a thorough read of that document and then tell me if you still think that there is no good reason for Glenn Canady’s sites to be banned from Google.

The only question in my mind is why he hasn’t been banned from the other search engines as well ! He is getting files FTP’d up to people’s servers and then having a link placed to them from the users home page.

I don’t know the exact details of this scheme. I wasn’t stupid enough to fall for his schemes a second time. To me it looks like some sort of variation on the old doorway pages, but possibly in a network with cross linked high PR sites. Remember what Google said was one of the reasons for banning sites : “setting up pages/links with the sole purpose of fooling search engines may result in permanent removal from our index.”.

BTW - I have no idea who the company are that are mentioned in that document. Everything I received from Glenn Canady (see the emails) claimed that the site and the whole thing was his idea, and Freetrafficblaster.com is indeed owned by GLC Ventures according to the WHOIS record.

Lets look at a couple of key statements that document makes :

It says that “you do not employ our Traffic Blaster service on any website that represents your sole or even a major source of your income. While our techniques have proven successful in the past, there is no guarantee that they will be acceptable to the search engines in the future.“

It also says “The signer of this document also acknowledges that using new and innovative ways to promote their website(s) in the search engines may result in negative results which may include loss of Google Pagerank and being taken out of the Google index.“

I say “Glenn Canady - you are an IDIOT !!!”

So, Glenn Canady gets loads of people to sign up to this dumb scheme of his. He even tells people that they may get banned from Google. He tells them not to use it on sites that they have their income coming from. Next thing 163 sites he has control of are banned from Google and this bozo is coming all over with moral indignation, claiming he has no idea why, and that he is whiter than white !

This is a guy who was claiming to be the internets leading SEO expert (his words, DEFINITELY not mine !). He is even trying to put a spin on this and tell visitors to his site that because of what happened to him you need his ’services’ to help you market your site ?!! Glenn - NO THANKS !!!

Note - I am not saying that this IS why Glenn Canady’s sites got banned. I am merely holding this up as ONE example of how Glenn Canady’s so-called ‘SEO techniques’ COULD have got them banned. What he was doing was a banning offence under Google guidelines. I am disgusted (but not surprised) that Glenn Canady has the cheek to say the things he is saying on his web site. Pretending that he doesn’t know any reason why Google might ban his sites, making stupid claims that he has somehow been ‘censored’, and throwing in quotes about God, censorship, democracy, and dictators, from a whole load of famous people, like they’ve given these as some sort of testimonial for him !

I’m going to wind up this post in a minute. I’m painfully aware that this single post is bigger than some peoples blogs ! In my next post I will cover some more possible reasons (complete with examples) as to why Glenn Canady may have had his sites banned. I’ll also have a few other interesting snippets about Glenn Canady’s sites that I think people should be aware of. After that I’ll get back to what I was intending to do, which was to concentrate on AB Development and Glenn Canady’s Gorilla Website Marketing Course.

On Glenn Canady’s censorship page he asks people to band together to help and support him in his fight against Google. Me, I’m siding with the good guys. I’ll be contacting Google to congratulate them and offer them all the support and evidence I can provide them with (like they don’t have it already !).

Glenn Canady talked about his reputation “and in the end, that’s all a man’s got!”. What about honesty and integrity ? It works for me and most other people !
